Lila Sapinsley served six terms in the Rhode Island Senate, from 1973-1984, and was the first woman to head her party in either legislative branch.

Sapinsley advocated for peace and minority and women's rights. Although a lifelong Democrat, she became a supporter of Senator John Chafee, a Republican, in the early 1960s. Sapinsley ran for Lieutenant Governor in 1984 and lost by a narrow margin.

Sapinsley entered the Rhode Island Senate in 1972, only weeks before the U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling legalized abortion. She defended women's rights to reproductive choice in many speeches and fought bills that sought to limit those rights, including the one here.
