Rhode Island sculptor Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (1890-1960) was of African American and Native American descent.

In 1918 she became the first woman of color to graduate from the four-year course at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Prophet taught sculpture at Atlanta University Center from 1934 to 1944. She then returned to Rhode Island, where she died in poverty and obscurity in 1960.
