Mountaineer and suffragist Annie Smith Peck (1850-1935) applied to Brown in 1874, almost two decades before Brown President E. Benjamin Andrews began the bold experiment of admitting women.

Peck's application to Brown was denied, and she graduated instead from the University of Michigan in 1878. Later she taught Classics at Purdue University and Smith College.

A middle-aged Peck took up the unladylike pursuit of mountain climbing. At age 59 she planted a "Votes for Women" pennant atop a 21,000-foot peak in Peru. She completed her last climb at the age of 82.
