In 1993, Elaine Marks, a pioneer of Women's Studies, served as president of the Modern Language Association of America. This draft of the Presidential Column, which appeared in the MLA Newsletter in December 1993, is indicative of Marks's willingness to take a position in difficult and sensitive debates.
